Boehmite—A Key Material for Lithium Battery Safety

2025.09.26

This mineral possesses a unique layered structure, existing in both natural and artificial forms. Natural boehmite is found in bauxite and can be converted into alumina upon calcination. Synthetic boehmite is highly pure and heat-resistant, making it suitable for use as a catalyst carrier, lithium battery coating material, inorganic flame retardant, and papermaking filler.

Boehmite is primarily used to coat lithium battery cell separators and electrode plates. Coating it on lithium battery cell separators improves their heat resistance and puncture resistance, enhancing the safety of lithium batteries. Coating it on electrode plates prevents burrs generated during the slitting of the positive electrode material from piercing the separator, improving battery safety, enhancing battery production processes, and increasing energy density.

Furthermore, thanks to its low magnetic foreign matter content, low water absorption, low specific gravity, and low Mohs hardness, boehmite can also help improve battery rate and cycle performance, increase battery cell yield, and reduce self-discharge during use, making it a key material for enhancing the safety and reliability of lithium batteries.
